Can You Put Protein Powder in Hot Drinks or Porridge?
Check the powder’s directions before heating it. Some protein powders can be used in hot drinks or porridge. Heat can change a protein’s structure without erasing its amino-acid sequence. That does not mean every ingredient in a finished blend is unaffected by heating.1, 3, 5
The kettle has boiled and breakfast is nearly ready. Could your usual powder go into the mug or bowl, instead of a cold shake?
Start with three separate questions: will it mix pleasantly, what does the evidence say about heating, and is this preparation suitable for your particular product?

Choose the method before adding the powder
This is a practical planning guide for adults. Use it alongside the powder’s and equipment’s instructions.

Does heat destroy the protein?
Protein chains fold into particular shapes. Heat can change that folding, a process called denaturation. The amino-acid sequence can remain intact even though the shape changes. Denaturation also happens during digestion.1
Think of the change from liquid egg white to cooked egg white: a change in structure is not the same as the protein disappearing. But denaturation is only one possible effect of processing. FAO’s protein-quality report explains that heat treatment and other processing can also cause chemical changes that reduce the availability of certain amino acids, notably lysine.1, 3
The useful conclusion is measured: heating does not automatically make protein worthless, and “heat changes nothing” is too broad. The conditions and the food being heated matter.
What the research can tell us
In a laboratory study, researchers heated skim milk at temperatures from 55°C to 95°C for 30 seconds. They observed changes in protein structure and more aggregation at 85°C and 95°C. This helps explain changes in texture; it was not a trial of protein coffee, porridge or health outcomes.2
A separate 2025 double-blind, randomised crossover trial involved 15 healthy, recreationally active young men. Each consumed 40 g of specially prepared milk protein with either low or high glycation, a chemical modification involving sugars. Less protein-derived lysine reached the circulation over six hours after the highly glycated protein.4
Those were deliberately different protein preparations, not a comparison of a normal hot drink with a cold shake. The study cannot tell us how much nutrition changes when a consumer stirs powder into porridge, or establish a household temperature limit. Neither study tested BioBoost.2, 4
Why a powder may clump
Heat-related aggregation means proteins can gather together, changing how a mixture behaves.2 A lumpy drink is therefore a texture observation, not a measurement of how much usable protein remains.
Where a product allows warm preparation, a practical option is to first mix the recommended powder amount with a little cool liquid in an open cup, then gradually stir it into the warm drink. For porridge, stirring it in after cooking may make the texture easier to manage. Follow any product-specific method or temperature instruction instead.
These are mixing suggestions, not a validated method for retaining every nutrient. If a powder repeatedly gives a texture you dislike, keep it in the preparation you enjoy rather than adding extra servings to compensate.
Check the whole blend
A protein-only ingredient and a blend containing vitamins, cultures or enzymes are different products. Evidence about whey structure cannot establish the stability of everything else in a pouch.
Vitamin C is one example: NIH guidance explains that it is susceptible to heat and that cooking can reduce its content in food.5 That does not quantify losses from your supplement. It shows why a manufacturer’s guidance needs to cover the finished formulation.
Ask: “Is this flavour suitable for hot drinks or cooked food? Is there a recommended maximum temperature or preparation method?” Without product-specific evidence, a universal figure such as 40°C, 60°C or 80°C would be an unsupported rule.

Use suitable equipment and keep allergy checks
Do not shake hot or warm liquid in a standard sealed shaker. BlenderBottle warns that pressure can build up and force its flip cap open, spraying the contents. Use an open, heat-safe vessel for an appropriate warm preparation, and follow your equipment’s instructions.6
Heating is not a way to make a whey powder suitable for someone with a milk allergy. FSA guidance warns that kitchen heating does not reliably remove food proteins’ allergenic potential. Check the powder, milk or plant drink, and any extras.7

Choose the meal or drink you enjoy, then check whether your powder belongs in that preparation. Use the recommended amount and a suitable method. A convenient routine should leave you with fewer questions, not another rule to memorise.
